The disease has now infected six students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, per the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Of the 1,067 students in the school, 33 have not been vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Peter Licata said at a school board meeting Wednesday, per ABC.
"The absence of travel history in the measles cases suggests we are likely seeing local transmission, underscoring the serious risk to the community," says Dr. Jade Cobern, a physician board-certified in pediatrics and preventive medicine.
Measles is highly contagious, and with its long incubation period of 11 to 12 days, there's a high likelihood that more children are infected without showing symptoms yet, Brownstein adds.
Per the CDC, the number of measles cases in the US this year is on track to top last year's count of 1,249, which was the highest number of cases reported since 1992.
