A Light Bulb Went Off: 'Alexa for Telemedicine!'

When Phoenix Children's Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz., saw a spike in the number of telehealth visits during the Covid-19 virus, it decided it needed to figure out a way to make those visits even more convenient for parents and other family members.

So the hospital teamed up with Amazon to develop a hands-free gadget that could be used in every exam room at the facilityand Amazon's Alexa voice-activated assistant was the perfect solution, Healthcare IT News reports.

"I glanced up at the Alexa Show in my living room and the idea struck me'We could use an Alexa device,'" says David Higginson, the hospital's executive vice president and chief innovation officer.

"They never crash, never need manual updating, are inexpensive, and I recently recalled seeing an article saying Alexa would be supporting Zoom," a company Phoenix Children's is partner with, he says.

Phoenix Children's had no new medical personnel to support the device, so it turned to Amazon, which had just launched an initiative called Alexa Smart Properties and was looking for early adopters to build out the product, Higginson says.

The hospital began testing the device at its first clinic, and it was "immediately very popular," he says.
