The US Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Children and Families has awarded the Committee for Children's Committee for Children's Second Stepa nonprofit based in Riverside, Calif.a five-year, $30 million grant to fund an online tool that educators can use to assess and report on the emotional well-being of their middle-school students, NPR reports.
The tool, called Second Step, was developed by a company called Children's Children's Insights, which is also a nonprofit that provides curriculum for social-emotional skills and intervention programs, per a press release.
It will be used at four schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and will be available for free on the Second Step website until the end of the 2020 school year.
"We know that kids in middle school are more likely to be bullied than kids in high school," Andrea Lovan, CEO of Children's Children's Insights, tells NPR.
