Business Quarterly: The Well School Blends Tradition and Innovation

"Everybody does everything."

That's the philosophy behind The Well School in Peterborough, New Hampshire, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Founded by the late Jay and Toni Garland in 1967, the private school for pre-K through eighth-grade students is known for its rigorous curriculum, as well as its theater program and puppets in its annual Children in the Arts parade, the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript reports.

"The philosophy of the school has always been 'everybody does everything,''" says head of school TJ Mackey.

"That means everyone has to play soccer on our intramural soccer teams, everyone takes part in theater, everyone goes to art class, everyone has to play the ukelele, and then they find out that they love music, or they love being on stage."

Students are also encouraged to "work though problems and advocate for themselves," Mackey says.

In addition to rigorous curriculum, the Well's small classes allow teachers to "find a way to educate every child in a way that works for them," Horgan says.

Students are encouraged to "shake hands, to look people in the eye, and to be courteous," she adds.
