'Lobster Innovation Fund' Would Pay Maine Lobstermen to Use New Whale-Safe Gear

If you're a lobsterman in Maine, you may be in luck.

State lawmakers are backing a bill that would pay lobstermen to test out new gear in an effort to protect endangered right whales, WGME reports.

"I think if we were hurting whales, we would be one of the first people to figure out how to stop it," says Greg Turner of Turner's Lobster.

"Before we spend millions and millions of dollars figuring out how to stop them from getting entangled, we first should figure out if they're even here."

The bill would set aside $1 million for the next two fiscal years to pay lobstermen to test new gear.

The state's Department of Marine Resources says it's backing the bill because new gear could be a solution to the problem.

Turner says he's testing out a "break away" gear, but it's not practical and he knows other lobstermen who've been injured by it.

"That runs off lobsters," he says.

"And then you think of all the tourism people that come here to eat lobsters."

The Maine Legislature's Marine Resource Committee unanimously approved the proposal.

Now it goes to the full legislature.
