When Lili Ben Ami's sister, Michal Sela, was murdered by her husband in 2012, the Israeli activist founded the Michal Sela Forum to raise awareness about domestic violence and fight it through "out-of-the-box thinking," "personal entrepreneurship, public awareness, and responsibility," per a press release from Canadian Hadassah-WIZO, the Jewish women's group that Ben Ami heads.
One way MSF is combating violence against women is through its Michal Sela Canines program, which provides protection dogs to women at high risk of abuse.
"The dog is a life-saving gift that provides the woman and her children freedom and independence, as well as physical and emotional security," says Lisa Colt-Kotler, CEO of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO.
"The criteria to be accepted to the program is that the threat to the woman's life must be recognized by law enforcement or welfare services and the victim must be living apart from the abuser."
The dogs are given to women who agree to live with them as family members, and Colt-Kotler says Canadian Hadassah-WIZO is in early stages of development to implement the program here in Canada.
