"Child care is the backbone of our economy."
So says Michigan Gov.
Gretchen Whitmer in announcing a $2.4 million grant that will go to 16 organizations across the state to plan for more affordable child care, the Detroit Free Press reports.
"Access to quality, affordable child care supports parents as they go back to work, ensures kids have the support they need to grow into their best selves, and helps businesses hire, recruit, and retain talent," Whitmer says in a press release.
The grants, awarded through the Early Childhood Investment Corporation's Child Care Innovation Fund and the Michigan Department of Education, will go to organizations in 81 counties and every region of the state.
"Soon, we will be calling upon families, child care providers, and local employers to provide input as we gather information," says Vicky Rowinksi, director of Macomb County Planning and Economic Development, which will receive $150,000 of the grant.
The Macomb group will use the money to determine what types of support might be needed to make child care more affordable for working families in the area.
