Charles Schumer says the University at Buffalo "has all the ingredients" to become a "global scientific research and tech hub" after the school received a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation to create a National Artificial Intelligence Research Institute to help children with speech and language disorders, the Buffalo News reports.
"This major federal investment will help bring technology into the classroom to ensure all children receive the help they need with speech and language processing challengesall thanks to the research of Buffalo scientists," Schumer says in a press release.
The project, called the AI4ExceptionalEd Institute, will be led by the university's Speech Language Pathologists and focus on early detection and saving time and resources, so pathologists can focus on providing direct services to children with speech and language disorders, according to the press release.
The funding, the first for an AI Institute from the NSF this year, was announced by Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and Rep. Brian Higgins.
