Children's Medical Center Plano has seen a huge spike in patients over the past few years, and hospital officials say they're not sure what's behind it.
"We did not expect the pediatric volumes of patients to be this high and continue to be this high over time," says Adriane Kreher, director of the hospital's respiratory care and pediatric intensive care unit.
"And then in innovation, I would say we've had to adjust our pediatrics many different times in response to these high influx of patients."
Sunni Yates, nursing supervisor at the hospital in Plano, Texas, tells KERA that it's "unexpected in that we did not expect the pediatric volumes of patients to be this high and continue to be this high over time."
The Covid-19 virus, for example, didn't bring a huge surge in patients, but it did lead to an increase in respiratory viruses such as Covid-19 and RSV, which had never been seen in the summer before, she says.
"We had never seen RSV in the summertime," Kreher adds.
"The pandemic did not bring high volumes.
We didn't start seeing an increase in respiratory viruses until the mask mandate was taken away in June of 2021."
