"The volume, complexity, and danger of sexual exploitation of children online are increasing, and have been fueled by conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic."
That's what the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has to say about a new report from the Government Accountability Office on the Department of Justice's efforts to protect children from online predators.
Per the center, reports of suspected child sexual exploitation increased 35% from 2020 to 2021, and the GAO report notes that the DOJ hasn't updated its National Strategy for Child Exploitation Prevention and Interdiction since 2016.
The 2008 PROTECT Our Children Act requires the DOJ to issue the strategy every two years, and the GAO report notes that since 2010, nine national coordinator detailees have held the position that was supposed to lead the strategy's development.
The 2008 Act also required the DOJ to issue the strategy one year after enactment and update it every two years thereafter.
However, the DOJ has only issued the strategy twice, in 2010 and 2016, and the GAO report notes that the most recent 2016 strategy did not fully include 12 of the 19 required elements, such as setting targets to accomplish quantifiable goals.
