A bill will make it easier for kids in the state to get food at school, the AP reports.
The so-called Community Eligibility Provision, or CEP, allows schools to get rid of the stigma of participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs by making it easier for students who qualify to get free or discounted meals.
It's part of a larger effort by the governor to fight childhood hunger in Florida, which has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the nation at 34%, according to USA Today.
"It is evident the pandemic shone a light on hunger in America and led to innovation and creativity to ensure no kid goes hungry," No Kid Hungry Florida executive director Sky Beard says in a statement.
The CEP allows schools to get rid of out-of-pocket costs for students, which promotes equity and eliminates the stigma of participating in school meals, according to the group.
The bill was one of several passed by the Florida legislature in 2022.
