"Our research, and everything we do at the gender clinic, stems from our desire to help kids in our community feel seen, heard, and valued," says Aytch Denaro, a social worker with Mary Bridge Children's Gender Health Clinic, which has received a $100,000 grant to study the health care needs of transgender and gender diverse youth.
The grant, from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, will fund a joint project between the clinic and the Research Institute to develop research priorities, which will become the basis for future studies, per a press release.
The release notes that "national studies consistently show that transgender and gender-diverse youth with access to gender-affirming care have better health outcomes, both physically and emotionally, than those who do not."
"Engaging in research is one of the most effective tools we have for improving care and making meaningful contributions to the bigger conversation about how to best support this patient population," says researcher Chaya Pflugeisen of the Research Institute.
Mary Bridge Children's Gender Health Clinic has been providing gender-affirming care to children up to age 18 since 2012.
