Marin to Launch Guaranteed Minimum Income Program

California's Marin County has become the first county in the state to commit $400,000 to a basic income program for low-income mothers, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

Starting in January, mothers with two adults, one preschool child, and one school-age child will receive $500 a month for 18 months.

"Many had two or three jobs in the county, but they weren't always in a position to make ends meet," says a foundation official.

"We're starting with those moms with the greatest aggregate of challenges: low income, young children, and facing the daily travails and insults of overt and covert racial discrimination."

Oakland is also testing a basic income program.
