According to the New York Daily News, the boardwalk fire has left more than 100 people injured and destroyed more than half of the city's hotels and restaurants.
Christie said the state of emergency will allow the evacuation of up to 100,000 people from parts of the city that could be affected by the fire, which is still burning in some areas, the Star-Ledger reports.
