"We are dedicated to ensuring that no child goes hungry during the summer break."
That's the message from Oakland, Calif., where the city's Summer Food Service Program resumes Tuesday, giving away more than 100,000 free meals over the next several months, KRON reports.
Most Oakland residents under 18 and adults with disabilities enrolled in a school program can qualify for a free meal, which will be distributed to more than 45 youth-serving sites across the city.
Many of these faith-based community sites said they would also provide snacks in addition to free lunches.
"By providing access to nutritious meals throughout the summer, we aim to foster a healthy and thriving Oakland," the city said in a statement.
