For the first time, a team from the United Arab Emirates took home the top prize at an international robotics competition.

The UAE's Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Center for Giftedness and Innovation won third place at the 2024 FLL International Open Robotics Championship, held in Norway this month, according to a press release from the UAE's Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Medical and Educational Sciences.

More than 50 teams from around the world took part in the competition, which " showcases advanced student skills in robotics and their innovative solutions to various environmental and life-related problems," Al Suwaidi, secretary-general of the foundation, said in the release.

"This experience boosts their confidence, enhances their capabilities and skills, and promotes the exchange of cultures and knowledge with other nations," Al Suwaidi added.

The team won first place in robot design, as well as third place in robot performance.
