Dougherty County School Board Candidates Make Their Case Ahead of May 21 Primary Election

The race for a school board seat in Georgia's Dougherty County is shaping up to be a close one.

The Albany Herald reports that in the May 21 primary, incumbent school board member James Bush is being challenged by retired educator Wanda Mallard.

Bush has been on the school board for 20 years.

He tells the Herald that when he first joined, the school system was in financial trouble.

"When I got on the board, we had to borrow $25 million every December, and I was wondering why this was happening," he says.

"We finally got our house in order.

We have a $41 million reserve at this particular time."

Bush says he's never supported a tax increase and that the school board has been able to roll back taxes six times in the past seven years.

Mallard says she's been active in education since she moved to the county 40 years ago.

She served as principal at an elementary school before becoming an adjunct professor of early childhood education at Albany Technical College.
