"Many people aren't aware that maternal mental health problemssuch as postpartum depression and anxietyare the No.
1 complication in pregnancy," Catherine Limperopoulos, chief and director of the Developing Brain Institute at Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC, said during a March 7 panel discussion on maternal health, per the Roanoke Times.
"One of the best things we do is we screen for postpartum depression up to six months, and we keep short-term mental health on staff."
Limperopoulos was one of three featured speakers for the event, which was sponsored by Virginia Tech's Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and Children's National, which has research programs in brain and behavior development at Virginia Tech's Health Sciences and Technology campus and cancer research programs at Virginia Tech's Children's National Research & Innovation Campus in Washington, DC.
