"The dangers of excessive heat to older people and those with heart and lung conditions are becoming well known, but the effects of heat during pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood get less attention," reads a new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which notes that record-setting heat waves are occurring more often and lasting longer than ever before.
"These effects are significant, including low birth weight and pre-maturity, learning loss during the school years, heat-related illness, and even death," the report says.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which is affiliated with the UN’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, has called for a global moratorium on the release of greenhouse gas emissions through the burning of fossil fuels, and for a host of measures to mitigate the effects of climate change, including measures to reduce exposure to heat, improve air quality, and reduce carbon emissions.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s report notes that the average temperature in the US last year was a full degree warmer than it was in pre-industrial times, and that the average amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere during the year was the highest it's been since record-keeping began in 1880.
