India has a new cancer drug on the market, and it's designed for kids.
The drug, called PREVALL, is a powder that can be " effortlessly reconstituted into a 100ml oral suspension at a concentration of 10mg/ml," reports the Times of India.
It's designed to treat children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common type of blood cancer affecting kids, and it boasts a number of new features, including a syringe and a press-in-bottle adapter that allows precise dosing to be tailored to a child's body weight or body surface area.
The 6-mercaptopurine drug is currently available in tablet form, and "Hitherto, suboptimal practices such as crushing the tablet or alternate day dosing were being adopted to meet the dosing requirements in children," says an official statement.
About 10,000 kids in India are expected to be diagnosed with ALL this year, and PREVALL will be available in major hospitals and pharmacies across the country within a few months.
