The startup scene in the small Quebec city of Montr ? al has long been known as Canada's Silicon Valley, and this year's Startup Community Awards were no different.
BetaKit reports 15 startups, stakeholders, and leaders were honored at the event hosted by MTL NewTech.
Nominations were gathered from 1,670 individual voters, with 8,460 total votes cast, according to a press release.
A panel of 13 judges looked at 475 nominees, whittled them down to 105 finalists, and ultimately selected Ora Medical as Pitch Prodigy of the Year.
"We genuinely believe that its success is due to its organizer being deeply ingrained in the fabric of its startup community," says Simran Kanda, general manager of MTL NewTech.
BetaKit reports Ora Medical, which won last year's Rising Startup of the Year, has developed a gait trainer that helps children through physical rehabilitation.
John Stokes, a managing partner at Real Ventures, was named Community Builder of the Decade.
According to a LinkedIn post following the event, MTL NewTech, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, began as a volunteer-driven platform aimed to help entrepreneurs exchange resources and best practices during the financial crisis.
