The mental health of college athletes is a hot-button topicand now it's going to get a lot more attention.

The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health at the University of Oregon is teaming up with the school's athletics department to create two full-time positions that will focus on the mental health of student-athletes from a young age, the Oregonian reports.

"Providing robust mental health support is crucial to ensuring the holistic well-being of student-athletes," says UO Director of Athletics Rob Mullens.

One of the new positions will be dedicated to improving the mental health of K-12 schools in Oregon, while the other will be devoted to providing care for UO students enrolled in the Ballmer Institute's child behavioral health training program.

"By investing in this initiative, we can help unlock the potential of K-12 students in Oregon and University of Oregon student-athletes, and we invite others to join us in this mission to create a brighter, healthier future for all," says Nancy and Dave Petrone, who donated $1.5 million to fund the initiative.

The program will be launched in 2024 at the new UO campus in Portland.
