Science City Organise Students Innovation Congress

The Indian state of Punjab has taken a big step toward becoming the first in the country to ban smoking in public places, the Times of India reports.

The ban was announced by the state's chief minister Parkash Singh Badal in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The chief minister said that the ban would be in place from Jan.

1 until the creation of a smoke-free zone in all states.

"The objective of the move is to create a conducive atmosphere for entrepreneurship in the state," he wrote.

The ban will be in place until the creation of a smoke-free zone in all states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Tripura, the chief minister said.

The chief minister also asked all states to ban the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products.
