A Legacy of Impactful Women at Cook Children'S

Dr. Shanna Combs is the first pediatric and adolescent gynecologist at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, but she's far from the first.

A former postmistress with few resources, Ida L.

Turner dreamed of a place where fragile babies would be cared for regardless of their family's ability to pay when she founded the Fort Worth Free Baby Hospital in 1918, according to the hospital's website.

A wealthy heiress, Matilda Nail Cook, dedicated the oil royalties from her Cook Ranch to build Cook Memorial Hospital in 1929, and the two children's hospitals eventually became one.

"After all, it was the vision and generosity of two women that started it all," the website states.

"One was a former postmistress with few financial resources, Mrs. Turner, who dreamed of a place where fragile babies would be cared for regardless of their family's ability to pay."

Today, the two children's hospitals are one of the largest free-standing pediatric health centers in the country, with more than 1.5 million patient encounters every year.

Combs, who has worked at Cook Children's for 20 years, says she's "just always been passionate about taking care of little ladies."
