Zimbabwean Youth Bring Innovative Solutions To Communities

A team of young innovators in Zimbabwe has won the United Nations' Generation Unlimited Youth Challenge with a "sustainable clean energy sourced lighting system," the BBC reports.

According to a press release, the Chigubhu Lantern uses plastic bottles, cans, and e-waste from used LED lights to create a solar-powered system that charges the lanterns using a charging port.

The lanterns can be used for up to four hours after each complete charging, which can benefit many children and adolescents, especially in rural areas, to study at home.

"We believe in the power of adolescents and young people as transformation," UNICEF Zimbabwe's country director says in the press release.

"They just require us to believe in them so that they can believe in themselves and bring the answers to issues that are directly affecting them."
