"They are forced to experience unbearable levels of violence, deprived of their childhood and their right to an education, and are left with deep physical and psychological scars that last a lifetime."

Those are the words of the UN's special representative for children and armed conflict, Virginia Gamba, in marking the International Day against the Use of Child Soldiers on Tuesday.

Gamba and the European Union's High Representative for Human Rights Josep Borrell issued a joint statement calling for an end to the recruitment and use of children under 18 years old in conflicts around the world, per the AP.

They also called for the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict to end "once and for all recruitment and use of children under 18 years."

The statement notes that children affected by armed conflicts "are forced to experience unbearable levels of violence, deprived of their childhood and their right to an education, and are left with deep physical and psychological scars that last a lifetime."

In Colombia, for example, the FARC rebel group has been fighting the Colombian government for five years now, leaving more than 100,000 people dead and millions displaced, per the BBC.
