Access to Mother and Child Care in Yemen

For more than four years, Yemen has been in the throes of a civil war, with a Saudi-led coalition intervening in 2015 to try to reclaim the capital city of Sanaa from Shiite Houthi rebels.

Now the country is facing an economic crisis so dire that the UN has called it the "world's worst humanitarian crisis."

The country's health care system has been decimated, with just 50% of its health facilities functioning and those that remain open lacking "qualified health staff, basic medicine, and medical equipment," per a press release from Royal Philips Foundation.

Adds Save the Children CEO Pim Kraan: "Mortality rates of expectant mothers are still too high."

To remedy the situation, the foundation has teamed up with Save the Children to deploy mobile ultrasound units to nine rural community centers across the country, where an average of 120 expectant mothers are seen per month.

The mobile units will also help train 17 local midwives to use them.

"The knowledge gained by midwives can have a lasting impression on mother and child care for underserved communities in Yemen," says Margot Cooijmans, director of the Philips Foundation.
