The device, called a transabdominal fetal oxygen saturation level (TFO) pulseimeter, can measure oxygen levels in the womb and determine whether a baby is at risk of losing oxygen to the brain or to his or her organs.
"It will let doctors know when the fetus needs to come out right away or risk losing oxygen to the brain or organs," says a computer engineering student who helped develop the device with a fellow engineering student.
"I'm very passionate about bringing the TFO medical device into hospitals as soon as possible, so that it can help women and children have better health outcomes," adds the professor who helped develop the device in his lab at UC Davis.
