"We want to have an innovation lab in every youth center to provide support and training for young people to find appropriate ideas for their own start-up projects."
So says Egypt's minister of youth and sports, Ashraf Sobhy, in announcing the opening of a UNICEF-run innovation lab in a Cairo youth center.
Sobhy says the goal is to help qualifying young people for the labor market and helping them start small, medium, and micro-projects and enterprises after graduation, per Al Jazeera.
The lab is just one component of UNICEF's "Mashwary" program, which has been running in Egypt since 2008 and has reached 400,000 young people with life skills and career guidance, per Al Jazeera.
"We strongly believe that all young people must have access to the right skills that will enable them to be active citizens and agents of change in a changing world," says UNICEF's representative in Egypt, Jeremy Hopkins, per Al Jazeera.
Sobhy adds the innovation labs "will support entrepreneurship and encourage young innovators in all Egyptian governorates to discover, refine, and nurture their talents while directing these talents in the right paths that serve the national development."
