When Helen Mayer lost her first job as a stay-at-home mom due to the COVID pandemic, she decided to do something about it: She started Otter, a company that connects working parents with child care providers who will then pay the stay-at-home parents to care for their children.
The idea is that the working parents get paid while the stay-at-home parents get paid while the child care is being provided, Fast Company reports. "The reality is that we need a diversity of solutions for the diversity of children and families' needs," Mayer says in a blog post about the company, which has raised $27.8 million from investors.
"Is it a panacea? No," the mother of twin boys writes. "The child care crisis predates the global pandemic. The reality is that we need a diversity of solutions for the diversity of children and families' needs."
