According to research by Investing in Education, the Reading Recovery program has a positive impact on reading achievement among first graders. The study assessed approximately 7000 students at 1000 schools over 4 years. Students who had participated in the Reading Recovery program were assessed at the 36th percentile, compared to the 18th percentile for a control group.
Positive results of Reading Recovery were seen in various subgroups, including English language learners and rural students. However, the study was not able to conclude whether the benefits were still apparent when the students reached 3rd grade, because the sample size was too small.
Reading Recovery is expensive to implement, in part because it requires substantial training and also ongoing support during implementation, but the 1-on-1 intervention showed a very large positive effect on reading achievement in this study.
