Child Care and Transportation Central to Wisconsin'S Workforce

"You think about college and we're saving for decades for college, these are costs that hit right as these families are starting to form," says the executive director of Milwaukee's Malaika Early Learning Center.

"The child with access to care becomes 'a nurturer.' They become the peer who able to help another scholar in their classroom and gives a lot of what we do now with those children that we do now with those children that turn into young adults."

That's the message from Wisconsin Gov.

Tony Evers, who last month announced a three-year, $170 million plan to expand affordable child care in the state, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

The Childcare Counts program subsidizes the cost of child care for 16,000 low-income families if they work or are in school and attend job training or college, per the state's Department of Children and Families.

It also subsidizes the cost of child care for 25% of the cost for businesses that offer their staff free child care, per the Journal Sentinel.

Gov.

Scott Walker has also proposed expanding Medicaid to cover the cost of child care, as well as funding preschools and after-school programs.
